MySQL.com is the public face of the Sun Database Group’s MySQL offering, with more than 70,000 downloads per day and millions of visitors each month. Key to this vital portal for developers, users and potential customers, is the MySQL database. To make sure other sites don’t have problems, MySQL.com uses the latest version available and this can provide unique challenges. Luckily the web team responsible for managing MySQL.com also have access to the latest version of Enterprise Tools like Query Analyzer.
Query Analyzer is able to provide database developers with in-depth details on how queries perform, how many times they run, and how many system resources they consume. With hooks to allow you to see exactly how the database will perform the query, Quan has proven an invaluable resource for the MySQL.com web team.
In this session Adam Donnison will explain how badly performing queries could slip through the cracks, and how using Quan found these queries within minutes of being deployed. In a graphic demonstration of the power of Query Analyzer, Adam was able to improve performance by several orders of magnitude, in just minutes.
Adam has worked closely with the Enterprise Tools team in every release cycle of Enterprise Monitor, and was particularly excited about Quan and its possibilities, but even he was impressed with the results.
Adam is currently a member of the team responsible for the MySQL.com websites. He was primarily responsible for the design of the current web infrastructure, which now achieves an enviable uptime, showing that it can be done with open source and commodity hardware.
In previous incarnations Adam has been an analyst programmer, consultant, systems engineer, trainer and courseware developer.
