This session will look on Enterprise Monitor 2.0 and it’s new Query Analyzer feature from a practical, user-oriented perspective. We’ll show how we’ve used these tools to get both new applications and changes to production more efficiently and cleanly, as well as decreasing the time for troubleshooting difficult application SQL code issues.

Lastly we will give a hands-on demonstration of these tools in action, isolating problems in a poorly performing application and then afterward verifying the improved performance.

Specifically, we’ll be looking at:
  • How Enterprise Monitor 2.0 in configured at our sites
  • How and when Query Analyzer is used
  • Profiling applications with Query Analyzer
  • Benchmarking applications with Query Analyzer
  • Troubleshooting applications with Query Analyzer
  • Gotcha’s and Issues
  • Demonstration of Enterprise Monitor and Query Analyzer in action

Phil Hildebrand

thePlatform

Phil Hildebrand has been working with a wide variety of platforms including MySQL, Oracle, Informix, and SQLServer since 1989.

Early in his career Phil was a UNIX systems programmer writing lexical analyzers for phone book pagination systems, which lead him into database design and development.

Currently Phil focuses on scaling VLDB systems on both UNIX and Windows operating systems in production environments.

Ryan Thiessen

Big Fish Games

Ryan Thiessen has been using MySQL as a developer and administrator since 1998. He is currently DBA Lead and MySQL guru at Big Fish Games in Seattle WA working with Operations and Engineering groups. Right now he is focusing on High Availability and data consistency across multiple data centres, and always maintains a passionate interest in performance optimization and tuning. In his spare time he is an avid gamer, and has recently started a weblog at hideandsql.com
