Internet penetration in whole world opens applications and databases to many languages and scripts. Though Unicode seems to be the silver bullet, it introduces quite a few problems in whole stack – from browser to database internals, and still comes in multiple flavors.
This talk merges experience from supporting international customer base, as well as working on multilingual projects – character set conversion issues, performance impact, limitations, security concerns and more.
Domas Mituzas is database engineer at Facebook and volunteer Wikipedia performance and data engineer.
He currently serves on the Advisory Board of Wikimedia Foundation, and has been member of Board of Trustees for it in the past.
